NGC1872

A rich cluster of thousands of stars dwells in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Star clusters are usually classed as either open or globular, but NGC1872 has characteristics of both. It is as rich as a typical globular yet much younger, which is evident in the young blue stars sprinkled across it. Such intermediate clusters are common in the Large Magellanic Cloud, but not in our home galaxy.

This Hubble portrait of the core of the great globular cluster Messier 13 provides an extraordinarily clear view of the hundreds of thousands of stars in the cluster’s central region. M13 is 25,000 light-years away and 145 light-years in diameter.
